HMB (beta-Hydroxy beta-methylbutyric acid)

Hydroxy-methyl-butyrate, or beta-hydroxy beta-methylbutyrate (HMB), is a substance produced by the metabolization of leucine, which is a branched-chain amino acid (BCAA). Various effects are attributed to HMB regarding the development of muscle mass, strength and sports performance. HMB is a metabolite synthesized by the human body itself, but it also occurs in foods such as fish and milk. It is possible to increase HMB intake via supplements in powder or capsule form, or as an additive to protein bars or energy bars.
