With science on your sideThere's been considerable research regarding the properties of krill oil, its Omega-3 content, its effects on cholesterol regulation—distinguishing between "good" HDL and "bad" LDL cholesterol—and its similarities to fish oil, also commonly taken as an Omega-3 supplement. In 2017, a meta-analysis of 7 trial studies found that LDL cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations in blood plasma were significantly reduced following krill oil supplementation, concluding it displayed efficacy in lowering these levels as well as in increasing those of HDL cholesterol.¹ One specific study from 2011 compared the effects of krill oil supplementation to those of supplementation with fish oil and came to the conclusion that there was no statistically significant difference in the increase in EPA and DHA between those supplementing with fish oil or krill oil, even if the EPA and DHA dose in krill oil was 62.8% of that in fish oil. The study also showed that fish oil and krill oil supplementation are similar in terms of adverse events and blood safety parameters, and that krill oil contains a higher amount of astaxanthin when compared to fish oil, indicated to increase HDL cholesterol as well as to decrease triglyceride levels in humans.² EPA and DHA contribute to the normal function of the heart.
