Glycine, or aminethanoic acid, is one of the 20 proteogenic amino acids used by the body for the biosynthesis of nucleic acid, bile acid, porphyrin, creatine phosphate, other amino acids and proteins. The main dietary sources of this amino acid are foods rich in protein, such as meat, fish, eggs, dairy products and certain cereals (e.g. barley, wheat, rye). Moreover, it is the primary amino acid in the peptide structure of collagen, constituing up to 35% of this protein.
