Dextrose is a “metabolic fuel” used by the human body for energy. Also called D-glucose, it belongs to a group of carbohydrates known as simple sugars (monosaccharides). It's the source of energy for cell functions, and regulating its metabolism is of vital importance. Glucose is catabolized in three subsequent processes — glycolysis, tricarboxylic acid cycle (TCA or Krebs cycle), and finally oxidative phosphorylation — to produce ATP.

Dextrose is involved in multiple energy-related processes, such as the synthesis of macromolecules, muscle contraction, transport of active ions, and thermogenesis.
